User Research

📱 iPad.png

I conducted interviews and compiled research insights to gain a deeper understanding of the users I'm designing for and their requirements. During this process, one of the primary user groups identified through research consisted of individuals seeking a comprehensive solution that integrates devices utilizing Apple's HomeKit framework, as well as other frameworks, all accessible through a single platform. This solution includes a desktop client, along with mobile and tablet applications. Subsequently, another group of target users identified were owners of smart home appliances who expressed a need to monitor and track their energy consumption.

Painpoints

COMPLICATED
SET-UP PROCESS

Users found the setup process for appliances a little tedious to follow sometimes and wanted a simple way to setup their devices or just migrate from their existing app.

1

NO DESKTOP CLIENTS
AVAILABE FOR EXISTING APPS

Many users wanted a desktop client as well other then their standard mobile/tablet app.

2

BETTER
AUTOMATION FEATURES

Users wanted an application which integrate automation services like IFTT and Automate.io

3

The Solution

Profile

  • users wanted a way to toggle multiple devices on/off at the same time without going on other page and toggle it from rooms. rooms shortcuts will be added.

  • Users wanted a guest mode so that temporary users can be added with limited access. Desktop / tablet could have better screen space utilization.

  • users found it frustrating to dig deep into the settings to customize their smart appliances.

  • Advanced settings should be made more accessible from the main homepage itself. Users found that the help page is missing.

  • A help page should be added so that users can easily troubleshoot their problems.

After doing usability study and further research gatherings, more features and pages were added to make the app seem more informative and complete in terms of a user’s journey.

Next steps

By creating a project that is minimal yet feature-rich, it has the potential to generate increased interest among a broader audience in utilizing smart home appliances. This, in turn, can contribute to further advancements and growth within the industry.

Conduct another round of usability studies to validate whether the pain points users experienced have been effectively addressed.

  • Improve Dark mode UI

  • Add the ability to pay bills from the app itself

  • Introduce more features in desktop mode

  • support more display sizes

  • Conduct more user research to determine any new areas of need.
